Relationship of Multiple Abortions to Birth Weight of Infants of Mothers Delivered in Hospital

Abstract
Author administered a questionnaire to 568 mothers delivered a general hospital and a OB/GYN clinic located in Daegu to assess relationship of multiple abortion to birth weight in 1991. Recruitment criteria were mothers delivered infants with birth weight more than 2,000 gm, gestational age more than 3() weeks, and without serious underlying diseases. Covariates were number of baby, maternal age, educational attainments, residency, regular occupation, sex of baby. Fifty-six of 568 subjects were excluded from analysis due to missing data. Twenty to twenty-four years of age group was 63.9 % and 10 - 12 years of education group was 49.1 %.¢¥55.1 % did not experienced abortion, 24.0 % experienced once, 12.7 % twice and 8.2 % more than three times. In univariate analysis, mean and standard deviation of birth weight of infants of mothers did not experienced abortion was 3239.9 ¡¾ 404.7, mothers who experienced once was 3357.1 ¡¾ 380.4, mothers who experienced twice was 330.29 ¡¾ 451.8, mothers who experienced more than 3 times was 3288.2 ¡¾ 432.3 (p= 0.06). In nulliparous mothers (n= 304), mean and standard deviation of birth weight of infants of mothers did not experienced abortion was 3188.9 ¡¾ 400.2, mothers who experienced once was 3309.5 ¡¾ 383.3, mothers who experienced twice was 3247.4 ¡¾ 416.5, mothers who experienced more than 3 times was 3352.5 ¡¾ 343.1. After controlling covariates with multiple linear regression analysis, mothers who expreienced once gave birth heavier infaats than mothers who experienced none, which showed a borderline significance (regression coefficient B= 79.3, p= 0.08). In nulliparous mothers, mothers who experienced once gave birth heavier infants than mothers who experienced none, which was statistically significant (B= 123.3, p= 0.04).
